Sometimes as a children’s librarian you are completely and utterly consumed by a picture book. Everyone must read it you think, it will only take them five minutes! Their day will be infinitely better having read that book. Preferably out loud, with voices. The rest of the world does not always feel the same. Sometimes people roll their eyes at you. Certain staff members turn and head in the other direction at the sight of you, picture book in hand, purposefully striding their way. You never give up. If the witty text doesn’t sucker them in then the hilarious illustrations will. Sometimes you put sticky notes on the cover. “Thought you would get a kick out of this” or “You can’t be a grandma and not read this one!”
Being a children’s librarian in a world full of normal people, is hard. Sure you have designated story times to share great books with a captive audience but what about when a new order comes in and you don’t have story time for TWO days! In these dire times it helps to blog.
Books you MUST check out SOON
Mabel and Me-Best of Friends-By Mark Sperring
A mouse and a girl are best friends. While strolling on a “Strolly Street” a variety of characters point out the mouse’s rodentyness much to her chagrin. Spoiler alert: There is totally a twist ending!
Poop Di Doop-By Stephanie Blake
A rabbit is born and he can only say one thing. “Poop Di Doop”. Is this picture book full of deep morals? Negative. Does this picture book make children giggle uncontrollably? Why yes, why yes it does.
The Bear Ate Your Sandwich-By Julia Sarcone-Roach
An impassioned narrator sits the reader down for an upsetting disclosure. It seems while the reader was off having a lovely time a bear came along and ATE their sandwich. The ending to this book is likely to be far funnier for adults than children but that’s okay. We need to be entertained sometimes too!
